Unju Temple is located off about 26km to the south west of Hwasun-eup. Gaecheon Temple and Unju Temple were situated to the east and west with Cheontae Mountain at its center. It was told that Dosun Buddhist Monk established Unju Temple and Thousand Buddhas and Thousand Towers and at the end of Unified Sylla Dynasty. It is widely called as Thousand Buddhas and Thousand Towers symbolizing sail of boat and boatman as its terrain is shaped like a boat according to the theory of divination based on topography of Dosun Buddhist Monk.
The place designated as a historical site No. 312 was excavated 4 times since 1984. Stone made buddha pavilion was disassembled and renovated, a circular multi-layered stone tower was repaired, a single column gate was newly built, Boje Pavilion was newly renovated and the entry road to Sleeping Buddha was re-constructed. At present, 21 stone towers and 93 buddha statues are reserved in the premise of the temple like a 9-layer stone tower, a circular multi-layer stone tower, stone made buddha pavilion and sleeping buddha at Unju Temple.
